Karl Friedrich Schinkel
The splendid Villa Schinkel has not been named after the great Prussian master builder and painter Karl Friedrich Schinkel without good reason. Schinkel greatly influenced architecture at the start of the 19th century, his works can still be admired in Berlin today in many locations. The ‘Neue Wache’ (New Guard House) – previously ‘Königswache’ (King's Guard House) – was designed by him as was the famous concert hall on the Gendarmenmarkt square, the ‘Alte Museum’ (old museum) on the Museuminsel (museum island) or the ‘Kronprinzenpalais’ (Crown Prince Palace) on Unter den Linden. In his constructions he conjures up memories of ancient Greece and contrasts absolute order with asymmetrical Greek freedom. In addition to numerous drawings of landscapes his many travels gave him a preference for infinite panoramas which earned him the reputation of having re-invented Romanticism.
