Therapy Concept
The Schlaganfallzentrum Loipl conceptionally offers preferably early and intensive rehabilitation programmes comporting with modern scientific understanding. Individual targets will be predefined in mutual decision-making together with the patients and their families. The ultimate ambition is to restore function and participation in life role activities suggested by the ICF model. Consequently, this treatment exclusively pursues a functional approach. This involves for the different stages:
In the environment of Intensive Care Unit: Weaning off the ventilator, advancement and reorganisation of memory and thinking, early mobilisation
In the environment of Intermediate Care Unit: Further advancement and reorganisation of memory and thinking, tracheostomy tube management, preparation for swallowing ability
Early rehabilitation in the Phase B environment: Early wheelchair mobilisation, supporting ADL abilities (activities of daily living), practice and relearn motor, cognitive and communication skills Advanced-level rehabilitation in the Phase C environment: Restoration of ability to perform activities of daily living, training to improve cognitive abilities and communication skills, gait training, training of arm and hand function
Post-hospital curative treatment in the Phase D environment: Further expansion to perform daily living routines, discharge management programmes with the target to interlink inpatient with the subsequent outpatient rehabilitation therapy
Main therapies include:
- Locomotion therapy practicing isolated movements, repeatedly changing from one movement to another, and rehearsing complex movements that require a great deal of coordination and balance such as walking up and down stairs. People too weak to bear their own weight can still practice repetitive movements on the treadmill while being partially supported by a harness.
- How to communicate and use their cognitive skills effectively in a daily routine setting is a specific training programme available to patients whose ability to use language and mental abilities has been compromised
- Specialty Outpatient Units providing evaluation and diagnostic services for swallowing disorders, including spasticity disorders and the supply of medical aids and appliances
