Speech Therapy

A stroke can appear in a wide variety of guises. The majority of those affected suffer from impaired communication ability. Patients with other neurological disorders or those who have suffered cranial/brain trauma can be affected by impairments to language, speech or swallowing. These patients are cared for by our speech therapy team made up from clinical linguists and speech therapists. more...

Our treatment range:

We offer intensive individual speech therapy, if required and tolerated, of up to one hour a day. In addition to our linguistic diagnostics and symptom-specific procedures, our therapy is guided by a hypothesis-driven approach. We attach great importance to the transfer into everyday language, which we support through group therapy, for example. Group therapy provides patients with the opportunity to practice and consolidate what has been systematically learnt in training.

In early rehabilitation, our work focuses on the initiation of communication, the gradual withdrawal of the tracheal tubes, and support for the patient in safe oral feeding (dysphagia therapy and gradual advancement of diet).

The treatment of patients with problems in swallowing is a major focus of our department. Since aspiration (‘swallowing the wrong way’) can lead to severe complications, it is important to diagnose problems early and quickly, both clinically and by means of video laryngoscopy conducted by a doctor (FEES – Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing), and then adjust patients' diet accordingly. The treatment is mainly guided by the methods of functional dysphagia therapy (FDT) and facio-oral tract therapy (FOTT as developed by Kay Coombes).

The treatment of speech disorders associated with Parkinson's disease is based on LSVT and other methods.
