Speech Therapy
Neurological disorders are frequently associated with speech, voice and swallowing difficulties.
The term aphasia – a communication disorder – is used when the language centres in the brain are affected. This results in some degree of impairment to the understanding of the spoken word as well as difficulty in reading, writing and speaking. By contrast, in the case of speech disorders – dysarthria – only the motoric ability to speak is affected. These direct or indirect motoric deficits cause an impairment of intelligible articulation.
Voice problems – dysphonia – can also be associated with neurological disorders, such as vocal cord paralysis. They result in a considerable restriction of communication, for example through hoarseness of the voice or complete voicelessness – aphonia.
Another very important treatment area concerns the diagnosis, therapy and care of patients with problems in swallowing – dysphagia. Since 2007, Medical Park Loipl has been able to carry out precise assessments and detailed descriptions using diagnostic apparatus in order to classify the various stages of severity of dysphagia.
On 1 June 2007, our Speech Therapy Department took delivery of a video endoscope. By introducing the endoscope with its miniature camera through the nose, anatomic structures such as the retropharynx, the base of the tongue and the entire voice box can be filmed. This is done while the patient swallows. Examinations with this instrument are one of the most significant and reliable medico-therapeutic procedures in the diagnosis of swallowing disorders and the monitoring of treatment progress in neurology and speech therapy.

Our treatment range:
All of these disorders are treated in individual or group therapy sessions. Each patient has his or her own individually devised therapy plan. In addition, our clinic has a therapeutic dining hall, where patients with swallowing disorders are cared for by specially trained staff in order to improve eating and drinking in a situation that reflects everyday life. Disorders affecting language, speech, voice or swallowing can occur in isolation or combination. People with language, speech, voice or swallowing disorders are generally at the centre of their respective social environment. For that reason, it is a further important therapeutic objective to provide advice and support for their partners and family members.
