Focal points on therapy - Neurology

The key to success for neurological disorders is the use of coordinated therapy concepts of all occupational groups. Severely affected stroke patients are treated by a therapist team made up of physiotherapists and ergotherapists, masseurs, speech therapists and neuropsychologists. Patients undergo some of the therapy with two occupational groups simultaneously so optimal support can be provided. Naturally these groups hold regular consultations with the doctors who are treating the patients so that the entire treatment team is kept updated on improvements or problems.

Ergotherapy

The most important objective in ergotherapy is the restoration of everyday functions for which our ADL course (activities of daily living) provides every opportunity. The patient learns how to handle the wheelchair which it may be necessary to use, how to use cooking and eating utensils in the same manner as how to fill up a car with petrol or to cross a pedestrian crossing in the specific green phase. The respective form of therapy is chosen and adapted according to functional capability. The arm studio is also overseen by the ergotherapy department. Modern arm therapy devices such as the Bi-Manu-Track, Reha-Digit, and Reha-Slide duo allow intensive treatment of the severely affected arm after a stroke in a group setting.

Physiotherapy

Our therapists treat patients using neurophysiological methods (Bobath, Vojta and PNF) and in doing so support the initiation of movements that have been lost. In addition positioning training – on a standing platform or standing table – is used. If the patient's coordination has improved so much that the patient can walk, a therapeutic garden is available. In the garden weight bearing can be improved as a result of the various ground conditions, inclines and obstacles and real everyday situations are practised.

Sports Therapy

In sports therapy the use of the latest equipment supports improvement in coordination and movement. An important therapy for acquiring a normal gait after a stroke is locomotion therapy. In this therapy the patient walks with the help of the gait trainer or on a treadmill. At the same time they are secured with a belt and their weight is partially supported. The gait trainer and the treadmill make it possible to achieve a higher number of steps per unit of time. The therapist ensures that the quality characteristics of the physiological gait are maintained and supported. With the aid of the newly developed gait training robot Haptic Walker the patient who is still wheelchair-bound can also practise repeatedly climbing stairs.

Computer-based balance training is also available with changes in weight bearing. When the changes in weight bearing have been achieved, they are reported back by the computer. The patient immediately receives feedback. Training on equipment is also important for neurological patients. For this reason we have fitted modern training equipment for arm function training. The paralysed or weak arm is therefore prepared for use in everyday life.
