ADL - Activities of Daily Living
We live in a very mobile society. We get from place to place in a car, on a bicycle or on foot. We stop at a red traffic light, and cross the road on green. For most people, this is all part of everyday life. But after a serious illness, injury, surgery, or a stroke, the whole world suddenly changes from one day to the next. Along with physical handicaps, many victims suffer from feelings of uncertainty and fear. Everyday life situations become extremely challenging. As a result, some patients isolate themselves in their own four walls. Medical Park clinics help these patients by providing a specially developed ADL training programme. ADL stands for the many different Activities of Daily Living that patients can relearn with our support. Everyday life in the city: For some patients – even after rehabilitation –, crossing the road becomes a threatening situation. The green light doesn't stay on long enough to reach the other side safely. Some people would rather not deal with these uncertain adventures and tend to withdraw. This is something we want to change. Our specially-trained teams of therapists help patients learn how to master everyday situations once again. Detailed measurements show that, through intense training, our patients increase their walking speed and regain their self-confidence. Even refuelling the car can be a problem. What is the best way to open the fuel cap? What do you do with your walking aid? Our patients learn new ways to cope with everyday situations – with the support of a treatment team and specially designed vehicles. We want our patients to return to their normal daily lives – at home and at work. The family car plays an important role. But before the trip starts, one has to get into the vehicle. ADL training focuses special attention on this task, and helps turn an obstacle into a familiar task. Shopping is something most people don't really think about. It's simply a part of everyday life. But for many, going to the supermarket is a difficult task. Reaching up to shelves stocked with products in all shapes and sizes, unpacking the shopping trolley at the checkout, and paying with coins that have suddenly become very tiny – all of these activities can be practiced in our specially designed, on-site supermarket. Loading the car is another major challenge with a high risk of re-injury.
